This is a quick hack guide to getting a job in the UK.
First
If you are hungry right now, first find food and water, visit the Salvation Army, or attempt to find leftover food. Drink the least alcohol you possibly can. If desperate, often you can reliably find chain restaurants provide free sugar sachets on the side, and they usually have to provide water. You can charge your phone if you are polite. Head to a library.

Alternatively
Use a combination of your Birth Certificate, and an Official Document with your National Insurance number on it to get a bank account and prove right to work.

Jobcentre Plus, and homeless support charities, can assist.
If your friend or relative gets benefits, they are only be affected if you normally live with them as your main home. Just getting post at someone’s address should not affect benefits.
Bank Accounts
First, prepare basic identity documents and relevant contact information. This will be useful later when applying, so make sure to keep it in a handy folder.
Visit the bank and check your account is ready for payments. In the UK, the 8 biggest banks have to provide “Basic Accounts”, for bad credit, and that anyone can get with no address. Open a bank account with your ID if you don’t have one.
Benefits
If you are not receiving benefits already, the Jobcentre Plus is a good place to stop by because they can assist with funding for travel, clothing, courses, and provide interview help. The money might help you to get into a private small single room, quicker than you think with careful planning. This will help with your appearance and will make your chances at good work better. Most of the time, you can start work and make up to £400pm and your benefits do not even start to decrease.

Clean up as much as possible with simple washing (wet wipes, change socks/shirt) to improve presentation.

Tips Once you Start
- Don’t repeatedly ask about payment or advances, if they are an official and established businesses, checking your agency PAYE form is good for checking that, you will definitely get minimum wage, and they will pay you if you do your job reliably.
- Minimise complaints, just do the job, as others do, and as you are asked. Ask them if stuck.
- Once you have completed your first shift, go to the office and request as much work as possible (or at least more shifts).
- If there is no major issue with your work, go to the agency office, once they are holding enough money, and ask politely for an advance (they may also support the housing process, or not).
- Be minimal in your social interactions at work, don’t try to figure out anything that people might not want to tell you. Use your breaks to quickly eat and use the loo.
- Don’t forget to pro-rate your holiday pay with agency work. This is an extra £1 an hour, approximately.
- Do exactly what you say you will. Be everywhere you say you will be, without fail.
Housing
This is not explictly covered here, but some tips are:
Consider saving £5000 for a mortgage, this will enable a mortgage in 2025 on a number of cheap 1-bedroom houses currently available in Durham area, with even basic credit scores. Consider taking someone who knows what they are doing with you when you understand the numbers. Don’t use hard credit checks, use soft checks to see if you are eligible. Mortgages are about £150-200pm for the cheapest properties currently (which do start around £20,000), verified Oct 2025. This way, technically, the money you are paying in is still yours.
Consider Single Room House Shares from lettings agents and popular property advertisers like RightMove and OnTheMarket. You do not always need a council property. There are usually some rooms available nationally which are possible on the Universal Credit Benefit without a council placement. Avoid holiday parks, because you are not allowed to live there full-time. You can check if they are bills included, and that there is a lock on your door.
Remember
Use library or Jobcentre computers to email all the agencies offering jobs like factory or temporary work. This will get you out of the cold. Go into the agency headquarters as well as emailing them, and politely and carefully pretty much beg them for a job (anything) unless you get a really firm “No”.
