El Niño Heat Advice – Prepare For Supermega El Niño Heatwave

Someone photographing a hot thing, rather than acting, which is what we tend to do nowadays.

Title: Record-breaking monster El Niño is forming and the last time it was this bad it killed 60M people

UniladTech says the current situation is very serious, and while this news is sensational, it is at the levels of “THIS IS HUGE” that I like, and that we like here at Circuspam!

Prepare your water solutions ahead of time so that they can fill, and so that you are ready when a crisis or drought does strike.

Water butts are the tanks that go on gutter downpipes to catch rainwater. It is the small size, and it is barely enough water for one person for one week (100L). Alternatively you can stock up on bottled water in your home. Twelve 5L (large) bottles of water is only ONE WEEK of water for one person. With this El Niño, you might want to begin storing 2 or 3 weeks—i.e., thirty-six 5L bottles of water per person. They will take some time to carry if you need to buy them on separate trips to the store.

If you can keep your usage to a clinical low, you will need at least 4.5L per day as an absolute safety minimum (with practically no washing).

Water butts are a good solution, but you will also need a filter for the water, such as a countertop gravity filter. They can be relatively simple to fit, even in rental properties (with permission). You can do this by replacing the screwed-in downpipe section with your own that you can cut. Downpipes for gutter systems can be brittle and snap, but they are not that expensive to replace.

It is possible to improvise a fitting, if you really need to, using tape and/or sealant, and a siphoning hose. I cut the downpipe for mine to fit the diverter as the manual said, because this will prevent rainwater splattering to the ground when it fills, but I have just tied mine in place for now because the clips were already brittle.

The next thing you should do is remember to be proactive about things like getting rubbish cleared in hotter weather, and make sure you have stocks of cleaning products and tinned food that you might need.

I am planning to fit another water butt. Another solution might be, in a crisis, that you could divert or pump water into the bathtub for storage. Make certain bath plugs fit and seal really well so that water will not leak away. Good rubber stopper plugs will stop water leaving the bath via the plughole completely, and are better than the basic plastic plugs most people have. This way, you can fill your bathtub when there are safe levels of water, if you think the taps will go off.

Unfortunately, oil use probably makes the climate situation worse, which is why I am questioning the rules about how Trump seems to be prioritising his use of oil over climate safety. However, here are some more good ways to keep temperatures down when things get hot, and some more things you can prepare ahead of time:

  1. Paint houses and spaces white.
  2. Shade walls, gardens, and streets.
  3. Cover concrete with leftover water.
  4. Use trees to shade things.
  5. Open windows at night, not during the day, and close them just before sunrise.
  6. Shade the windows during the day when the heat is extreme.
  7. Try to keep large mass (like concrete) at a low temperature over time. This can be done by shading large masses that will absorb heat, as much as possible, to keep them at a lower temperature.
  8. Attempt to keep the temperatures lower than “just bearable”. Do this when you have the ability to do this, so that you can cope with more heat when it gets hotter in the day.
  9. Use cheap fans to blow the air OUT, not IN. The best distance is not in the frame, but about 30cm inside the frame pointing out.

STAY SAFE EVERYONE. KEEP SPAMMING.
